Bernadette Claps (Bernie) always knew she wanted to work in a meaningful way to help the less fortunate. She received a master degree in Social Work from New York University and over the course of time attained Graduate certificates in Spiritual Direction, Spirituality and Aging.

For many years Bernie was a Social Worker and ultimately Assistant Division Director for Housing And Social Concerns in Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen. It was Bernie's task to help people with financial and
emotional problems obtain needed housing, food, mental health and medical services. In the many fruitful years she spent in social work she continuingly recognized a need for those she served to identify with their personal relationship with God.

In time, she came to realize that perhaps God was calling her to a new path and after much prayer and careful discernment, on November Ninth of 2013, Sister Bernie Claps, CBS professed her final vows - her commitment to serve God as a religious sister for the rest of her life! Her days are now filled with providing others spiritual direction and companionship and offering retreats. She is also a Board Member on Asylee Women Enterprise (AWE) an organization that assists women who have had to flee life- threatening situations in their countries and are seeking asylum in the United States.
