St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

My object in pronouncing my vows is to embrace Poverty, under whose roof I desire to live and die; Chastity, so lovable and so beautiful, that I truly find all my happiness in cultivating it, and above all, Obedience, the sure refuge and safeguard of my soul.

Life as a Sister: In Community

Righteousness and Purity

If you consider that God is righteous, you also know that everyone who acts in righteousness is begotten by him.

See what  love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope based on him makes himself pure, as he is pure.

Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who remains in him sins; no one who sins has seen him or known him.

1 John 2:29–3:6

Solemnity of Mary

Homily of His Holiness Pope Francis –  January 1, 2017
Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart! (Lk 2:19).  In these words, Luke describes the attitude with which Mary took in all that they had experienced in those days.  Far from trying to understand or master the situation, Mary is the woman who can treasure, that is to say, protect and guard in her heart, the passage of God in the life of his people.  Deep within, she had learned to listen to the heartbeat of her Son, and that in turn taught her, throughout her life, to discover God’s heartbeat in history.  She learned how to be a mother, and in that learning process she gave Jesus the beautiful experience of knowing what it is to be a Son.  In Mary, the eternal Word not only became flesh, but also learned to recognize the maternal tenderness of God.  With Mary, the God-Child learned to listen to the yearnings, the troubles, the joys and the hopes of the people of the promise.  With Mary, he discovered himself a Son of God’s faithful people.

A House for All

Thus says the Lord: Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice about to be revealed. Blessed is the man who does this, the son of man who holds to it; Who keeps the Sabbath free from profanation, and his hand from any evildoing. Let not the foreigner say, when he would join himself to the Lord, “The Lord will surely exclude me from his people.”

The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, ministering to him, Loving the name of the Lord, and becoming his servants – All who keep the Sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, Them I will bring ot my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer; Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar. For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. Thus says the Lord God, who gathers the dispersed of Israel: Others will I gather to him besides those already gathered.

Praise You, Lord

I will extol you, O Lord, for you drew me clear and did not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O Lord, you brought me up from the nether world; you preserved me from among those going down into the pit.

Sing praise to the Lord, you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name.
For his anger lasts but a moment; a lifetime, his good will.
At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing.

“Hear, O Lord, and have pity on me; O Lord, be my helper.”
You  changed my mourning into dancing; O Lord, my God, forever will I give you thanks.

– Psalm 30: 2, 4, 5-6, 11-12a, 13b

The One

At that time, John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” When the men came to the Lord, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?’ ” At that time Jesus cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he also granted sight to many who were blind. And Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”

– Luke 7:18b-23

Life as a Sister: How Did I Get Here?

The Lord Hears the Cry of the Poor

I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the Lord:
the lowly will hear me and be glad.

Look to him that you may be radiant with joy,
and your faces may not blush with shame.
When the poor one called out, the Lord heard,
and from all his distress he saved him.

The Lord confronts the evildoers,
to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.
When the just cry out, the Lord hears them,
and from all their distress he rescues them.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.
The Lord redeems the lives of his servants;
no one incurs guilt who takes refuge in him.

– Psalm 34: 2-3, 6-7, 17-18, 19, 23

Virgin Betrothed

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” Then angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be not end.

Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

– Luke 1:26-28, 30-33, 38a

Thus Says the Lord

Thus says the Lord, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I, the Lord, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go. If you would hearken to my commandments, your prosperity would be like a river, and your vindication like the waves of the sea; Your descendants would be like the sand, and those born of your stock like its grains, Their name never cut off or blotted our from my presence.

Isaiah 48: 17-19

Hail Mary, full of grace.

The Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou amongst women,
